5-Day Trail to Kawah Ijen and Sukamade: Volcano & Turtle Beach Adventure

Day 1 – South Bali to Pemuteran

We pick you up from your hotel in South Bali and proceed via breath-taking rice terraces to Pemuteran on Bali’s north west coast. You will arrive in the early afternoon and check into the hotel. Spend the rest of the day on the beach. This is one of the very best areas on the island for snorkeling.

Overnight : Taman Sari Cottages or similar

Day 2 – Pemuteran, Kawah Ijen, Kalibaru

Early morning depart for Gilimanuk. Cross the Bali Strait on the ferry to Banyuwangi. Proceed to the Ijen Highlands and climb Mount Ijen, one of Indonesia’s most impressive volcanoes, where men haul heavy loads of sulphur from the lakeside inside the crater. After a picnic lunch, continue to Kalibaru and check into the hotel.

Day 3 – Kalibaru to Sukamade

Drive across the extensive plantations of East Java and the mountain range of the Meru Betiri Reserve to Sukamade Turtle Beach, a wild 3 km sand strip on the Indian Ocean where five species of turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. Stay at the nearby lodge and return to the beach at night for turtle spotting.

Overnight : Lodge in Sukamade

Day 4 – Sukamade to Kalibaru

Spend the morning exploring the surroundings of Sukamade, an area virtually void of people. Take a dip in the crystal clear waters of the nearby river, then leave in the early afternoon to be back at the hotel before dark.

Day 5 – Kalibaru to Bali

Return to Banyuwangi and, after the ferry crossing, follow the western coast southward. We take you back to your hotel in South Bali or to the airport.
